Hello

Hello
Description: or greeting. It may be a contraction of archaic English "whole be thou". It is equivalent to other forms such as "Hi", or "Hey".

Speakers of many different languages use "hello" or something similar when speaking. Examples would be Russian "алло" (pronounced as 'allo') and Thai "haloo".

Prior to "Hello" was "Hullo". Hullo was not a greeting. It was an expression of surprise. Though much less common than it used to be, the word "hullo" is still in use, mainly in Britain.

Hello is thought to be the only English word with three variant spellings, all with equivalent meaning: hello, hallo and hullo.

The word hello is credited to Thomas Edison specifically as a way to greet someone when answering the telephone; allegedly when expressing his surprise with a misheard "Hullo"

Another word that was considered was the "Hoy-hoy". It has become a running gag on the television show The Simpsons. Montgomery Burns uses this greeting when telephoning.

Things commonly known as Hello include:

* Hello! — a British celebrity magazine
